Designed by champion Australian jockey Greg Childs, Twice Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup Wining Jockey. Greg designed the Vipa protector after listening to complaints from fellow riders and from his own children about their old body protectors being too bulky, too hard and too stiff. The aim was to create a vest that was both safe and comfortable, and that allows riders to flex and move without restriction. In development, the "Jockey Vest" had to meet a strict criteria, it not only had to pass the relevant standards, it had to be light and comfortable to wear. Following extensive trials, a laminate of perforated foams, constructed in strips, proved the most suitable. The continual movement of up to seventy independently hinged, perforated foam sections, pump air through the channels and out through the net fabric, to make this one of the most comfortable garments available. *BETA/EN 13158 Safety Standards for Riding Vests

Developed by the British Equestrian Trade Association, this standard is applicable in the United Kingdom but not in North America. The BETA 2000 standard is divided into 3 performance levels:

Level 3 – Protectors providing a level of protection that is considered appropriate for normal horse riding, competitions and for working with horses. Protectors to this level should:
* Prevent minor bruising that would have produced stiffness and pain.
* Reduce significant soft tissue injuries to the level of bruising.
* Prevent a limited number of rib fractures.

Level 2 – Protectors providing a lower than normal level of protection that is only considered appropriate for use in low risk situations. These do not include riding on roads or other hard surfaces, riding over jumps, riding young or excitable horses, or riding while still inexperienced.

Level 1 – Protectors providing a lower level of protection that is only considered appropriate for liscensed jockeys. Level 1 provides significantly less protection than a Level 2 garment as it is designed to meet the weight requirements of jockeys while racing. It is not intended for general horse riding.

**SATRA(Shoe and Allied Trades Research Association) Jockey Vest Standards

Satra Technology Center is a well-established testing laboratory in England. With their many years of experience, Satra has developed their own standards for equestrian vests. They are less stringent in terms of impact performance, but this allows for much more flexibility and less weight.
